  1. In the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV C-45)’s 47th mission, ISRO has successfully launched an electronic intelligence satellite ‘EMISAT’ for the DRDO along with 28 third party satellites from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
    • It is the country’s first Electronic Surveillance Satellite and will be used for Electronic Signals Intelligence (ELINT).
    • EMISAT detects electronic signals on ground, especially hidden enemy radars.

 

  1. Hump-backed Mahseer has been declared as the Critically Endangered species in the Red List of Threatened Species.
    • Declared by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
    • Also known as Tiger of the Water.
    • The Hump-backed Mahseer is found only in the Cauvery river basin including Pambar, Kabini and Bhavani rivers.

 

 

  1. A variety of turmeric indigenous to southern OdishaKandhamal Haldi earns Geographical indication (GI) tag.
    • The registration of GI is valid for 10 years after which it needs to be renewed.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  1. China has successfully launched the new-generation data relay satellites into orbit – Tianlian II-01, launched by a Long March-3B carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre.
    • It will provide data relay, measurement and control services for its manned spacecraft.
    • China launched its first data relay satellite, the Tianlian I-01, in April 2008.
    • Relay Data satellite – it transfers satellite’s information between the ground and space.

  1. International Labour Organization (ILO) released its report titled “Changing Business and Opportunities for Employer and Business Organizations” which lists the percentage of work activities that can be automated using current technology.
    • 51.8% of activities in India can be automated.
    • Japan and Thailand run the risk of 55.7% and 54.8%, respectively.
    • Automation threatens to impact women more than men.

BANKING AND ECONOMY

  1. Bank of Baroda became the second largest state-owned lender after merging Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank into itself as part of the first three-way amalgamation.
    • Also, it became the third-largest bank after State Bank of India (SBI) and HDFC Bank.

 

  1. Reliance Nippon Life Asset Management (RNAM) has partnered with Google to enable the customers of Reliance Mutual Funds to carry out voice-based financial transactions.
    • This makes RNAM, the first company to introduce conversational interface that would help customers regarding funds transactions.
    • RNAM is a joint venture between Anil Ambani-led Reliance Capital and Japan’s Nippon Life Insurance Co Ltd.

 

  1. The RBI guidelines on Bank’s exposure came in effect from April 1, 2019.
    • Particular Group – Credit to any particular group will have to be restricted to 25% from 40%
    • Individual Company – Restricted to 15%
    • Also, banks should disclose divergences, if “the additional provisioning for NPAs assessed by RBI exceeds 10 per cent of the reported profit before provisions and contingencies for the reference period”.
    • Earlier, banks were to make suitable disclosures if the additional provisioning requirements assessed by RBI exceeded 15 per cent of the published net profits after tax for the reference period.

 

  1. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in March 2019 rose to hit ₹1.06 trillion, the highest since the new indirect tax system took effect on 1 July 2017.
    • It rose 15.6% from a year ago.
    • Total gross GST revenue collected in March 2019 is ₹1,06,577 crore, of which CGST (Central GST) is ₹20,353 crore, SGST (State GST) is ₹27,520 crore.

 

  1. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed a Self-Regulatory Organisation (SRO) for the growing number of investment advisers to address issues related to the quality of advice given to investors by such entities.
    • As on March 19, 2019, a total of 1,136 investment advisers were registered with the SEBI, including 800 individuals and partnership firms.
    • Proposed Board Structure of SRO – At least 50% Public Interest Directors along with 25% representation each of shareholder directors and elected representatives. MD or CEO to offer daily affairs of the SRO.

  1. Manu Sawhney has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the world governing body for the sport – International Cricket Council.

    • Viktor Axelsen defeated India’s top shuttler, Kidambi Srikanth to win the Men’s Singles title.
