NATIONAL NEWS

  1. The govt. has approved the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019 which will bring persons living in remote and inaccessible areas under reservation ambit.
    • it would pave the way for extend reservation in jobs, promotions and education to people living 10 km from the International Border (IB) in Jammu.
    • Article 35A of the constitution empowers J&K legislature to define state’s “permanent residents” and their special rights and privileges.
    • Article 370 guarantees special status to J&K, restricting Union’s legislative powers over three areas: Defence, Foreign Affairs and Communications.

 

  1. The Cabinet has also approved amendment to the Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order 1954 by the way of Constitution (Application to Jammu & Kashmir) Amendment Order, 2019.
    • This will provide 10 per cent reservation for Economically Weaker Sections, which includes Scheduled Castes, Schedule Tribes in educational institutions and government job in addition to the existing reservation in Jammu and Kashmir.

 

  1. SHREYAS (Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills) was launched by Ministry of Human Resource and Development.
    • The programme promotes apprenticeship as an important part of education and integrates the government’s employment building efforts into the education system.

 

  1. As per the report of International Food Policy Research Institute, it was found that the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) was reported to have excluded women with low education and poorest households from availing the benefits of the program.
  • The ICDS benefits include food, pre-school education, and primary healthcare to children under six and pregnant women.

 

  1. Mera Kam-Mera Abhiman’ – Employment generation programme will be launched for the urban youth in Punjab which will “ensure dignity of labour”.
    • The programme is part of the State government’s ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgar and Karobar’ mission.
    • The aim of this mission is to provide one job for each family in a time-bound manner and the scheme would certainly reach out to every household.

 

  1. The 2nd Edition of Indian Sign Language (ISL) Dictionary was launched by The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in New Delhi.
    • It includes total 6000 words under the categories of academic, legal, medical, technical.
    • The dictionary is intended to serve as a resource for ISL teachers, ISL learners, teachers of the hearing impaired, interpreters, parents of hearing-impaired children and researchers.

 

  1. NITI Aayog and Adobe as a part of Atal Innovation Mission have signed a Statement of Intent to collaborate on enhancing digital literacy and creativity skills.
    • Under the agreement, they will open Digital Disha Programme across 100 schools under the Atal Tinkering Labs.
    • Under the Adobe Digital Disha Programme, the Adobe would provide Adobe Spark application, a fun and frictionless storytelling Creative Cloud application free of charge for education and skill development.

 

  1. National Mineral Policy 2019 was approved by the Cabinet which aims at more effective regulations.

 

  1. A new world record has been set up by The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities by carrying out Modern Artificial Limbs (Legs) implantation of 260 people in record eight hours.
  • The department is under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

 

  1. Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has launched the “Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN (Jaiv Indhan– Vatavaran Anukool fasal awashesh Nivaran) Yojana”.
  • It aims to provide financial support to Integrated Bioethanol Projects using lignocellulosic biomass and other renewable feedstock.
  • Lignocellulosic biomass (or LC biomass) refers to plant biomass that is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

 

  1. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) launched IRCTC iPay, its own payment aggregator system which is a step to promote government’s Digital India 
    • It provides payment options like credit card, debit card, UPI (Unified Payment Interface), International Card and an option of IRCTC prepaid card cum wallet, auto debit will also be available soon.

 

  1. “Mukhyamantri Parivar Samman Nidhischeme was launched in Haryana.
    • It is primarily meant for farmers of the state who cultivate on land with areas up to five acres and the families with an income of less than  15,000 per month.
  • Each beneficiary family would be eligible for a financial assistance of 6,000 every year and each family will have to nominate a member to avail this benefit.
  • The scheme provides insurance facilities of- 2 lakh on natural death, Rs. 2 lakh for accidental death, Rs. 2 lakhfor permanent disability and Rs. 1 lakh for partial disability.
  • There are two categories –
Category 1: Age 18 to 40 years – 4 options
Option 1Financial assistance Rs 6000 per year in 3 instalments of rs 2000
Option 2Beneficiary Nominated member by the family will get Rs 36,000 after 5 years of joining  
Option 3On age of 60 year, beneficiary will get pension between Rs 3,000 and Rs 15,000 on a monthly basis.
Option 4Family elected member will be get Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 30,000 after 5 years. Option of Insurance cover (state government will pay the premium)
Category 2: Age 40 to 60 years – 2 options
Option 1Rs 6,000 per year in 3 instalments of Rs 2,000
Option 2Rs 36,000 after 5 years

 

  1. Gram Samridhi Yojana is being worked upon by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries to strengthen the unorganized food processing sector concentrated in rural areas – Cottage Industry, Farmer Producers’ Organization and Individual Food Processors.
  • Its Rs 3,000 crore scheme funded by the World Bank (Rs. 1,500 Crore) and Government of India ( 1,000 Crore) while the state govts. will put in Rs 500 Crore.
  • The scheme will be run in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab for a five-year period in the initial phase and thereafter in other states of the country.

 

  1. Karnataka state govt. has launched new water conservation scheme – ‘Jal Amrutha’
  • The scheme plans to make people aware about the importance of conserving water.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  1. The 7th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Intersessional Ministerial Meeting was organized in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
  • RCEP is a Free Trade Agreement between ASEAN and Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.
  • ASEAN – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam.

 

  1. A UAE based company will release 12 bank notes of zero value which is the first ever limited edition commemorative series to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
    • The special notes have been designed by Dubai-based Indian artist Akbar Saheb who is also the main illustrator for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s book “Mann Ki Baat”.

BANKING AND ECONOMY

  1. According to Central Statistical Office, GDP growth has been revised in the 2018-19 financial year to 7% from the 7.2%.
    • It is the lowest in five quarters – 8% GDP was in the first quarter and 7% in the second quarter of this financial year.

  1. State Bank of India (SBI) has been authorized to issue and encash Electoral Bonds through its 29 Authorised Branches.
    • The bonds will be sold in three tranches from March 1-15, April 1-20 and May 6-15.
    • The Electoral Bond aims to account the donations made to all major political parties which is a bearer instrument like a promissory note.

  1. The Income Tax Department will “only” issue refunds via the e-mode into bank accounts of taxpayers and they should link PAN with their accounts.
    • Till now, the department used to issue refunds to taxpayers either in their bank accounts or through account payee cheques.

 

  1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has formed Eight-member task force on the offshore rupee market for ensuring the stability of the currency which will be headed by Usha Thorat.
    • It would also propose measures to generate incentives for non-residents to access the domestic market.

 

  1. IFFCO Tokio General InsurancelaunchedBank Locker Protector Policy’, which is the first stand-alone bank locker cover offered by any insurance company.
    • The policy is to protect the contents of a bank locker such as jewellery and other valuables.

 

  1. The Ministry of Finance released the first report on EASE Reforms Index.
    • The Index measures the performance of each Public Sector Banks on 140 objective metrics across 6 themes.
    • Punjab National Bank has been ranked first among Public Sector Banks in the implementation of ‘reforms agenda’, followed by Bank of Baroda and State Bank of India.

 

  1. The portal- PSBloansin59minutes.com has become the largest fintech online lending platform with loan sanctions exceeding over Rs 35,000 crore, as quoted by a report from Credit Suisse.
    • The portal was launched in November 2018 to provide credit of up to Rs 1 crore to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in just 59 minutes.

 

  1. According to Moody’s quarterly Global Macro Outlook, Indian economy is expected to grow at 7.3% per cent in 2019 and 2020.
    • For the fiscal year 2018-19, the Indian economy is expected to grow at 7%.

 

  1. IDBI Bank and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) signed a bancassurance agreement under which the lender will offer LIC’s insurance products at its branches.
    • Hemant Bhargava was appointed as the interim Chairman of IDBI Bank.

  1. Hasmukh Adhia, the ex-finance secretary was appointed as Non-Executive Chairman of Bank of Baroda.

  1. National Science Day 2019 is celebrated on February 28 in memory Sir C.V Raman.
  • The theme of the 2019 National Science Day is “Science for people and people for science”.
  • On this day, STARs (Scheme for Translational and Advanced Research in Science) scheme is launched by Human Resource Development Ministry.
  • Under the scheme 500 science projects will be funded whose selection will be made based on competition.

 

  1. Zero Discrimination Day is observed on March 1.
  • It aims to address the issue of discrimination faced by people across the world.
  • The theme for Zero Discrimination Day 2019 is ‘Act to change laws that Discriminate’.

  1. Kalam Innovation was presented in Governance Award 2019 at the third edition of Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Summit on Innovation and Governance, in New Delhi.

 

  1. Tata Steel has been recognised as one of the 2019 World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute.
  • The other Indian company to find a place in the list of World’s Most Ethical Companies 2019 is Wipro.

 

  1. British Indian World War II spy, Noor Inayat Khan, confirmed as thefirst Indian-origin woman to be honoured with a Blue Plaque at 4 Taviton Street in Bloomsbury, London.
  • She was an agent for Britain’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II.
  • The Blue Plaque scheme run by English Heritage honours notable people who lived or worked in particular buildings across London.

  1. India ranked 1st in International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF)World Cup which was held in New Delhi, India.
    • Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker claimed gold medal in 10m Air Pistol Mixed team event.
    • Saurabh Chaudhary finished top of the 10m Air Pistol category with record breaking 245 points and brought an Olympic quota for Tokyo 2020 in the category (1st Indian shooter to win gold at the youth Olympic, Asian Games, Junior ISSF World Championship and Asian Air gun championship)
    • Apurvi Chandela bagged the gold medal in Women’s 10m Rifle.

MISCELLANEOUS

  1. India’s first Braille laptop has been created by IIT-Delhi Scientists which is known as “DotBook”.
    • The Laptop is for visually-impaired people and has an interface in form of dots or Braille instead of a visual one.

 

  1. Arun Jaitley released a book titled ‘Mann Ki Baat – A Social Revolution on Radio’ during a function in New Delhi.
    • The book contains 50 episodes of PM Modi’s sincere talk with the citizens of India which is broadcasted by All India Radio.
  2. Nayantara Sahgal’s new novel – ‘The Fate of Butterflies” has been unveiled.
