NATIONAL NEWS

  1. As per the World Bank’s Migration and Development Brief, India retained its position as the World’s top recipient of Remittances with a USD 79 billion (USD 78.6 billion) remittances coming back home in 2018.
    • In 2016, India received $62.7 billion in remittances and in 2017 it was $65.3 billion.
    • The Remittances grew by more than 14% in India.
    • India was followed by China (USD 67 billion), Mexico (USD 36 billion), the Philippines (USD 34 billion) and Egypt (USD 29 billion).

  1. A three-day joint military exercise between India and Singapore named ‘Bold Kurukshetra–2019’ started in Jhansi’s Babina Cantonment, Uttar Pradesh.

 

  1. Veer Parivar App’, a mobile application for families of CRPF personnel killed in the line of duty has been launched on the occasion of the 54th Valour Day (Shaurya Diwas) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) celebrated on April 9, 2019.
    • It will be installed securely on the phones of the slain personnel families and will not be available in the app stores.

 

  1. The Cabinet Committee of Security has cleared the proposal for the procurement of the 464 T-90 tanks from Russia.
    • It would be replacing the older variants of T-72 and T-55 tanks in the force.

 

  1. India has become YouTube’s largest and fastest growing market with 265 million Indians watching the video-sharing website every month.

 

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  1. Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) gave approval to ‘Wing’ – a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabetto deliver packages via drone.
    • It is the World’s first commercial drone delivery service.
    • The drones will deliver food, over-the-counter medicines directly to clients’ homes.

 

  1. As per the World Health Organization, Global cigarette sales in 2017 stood at $700 billion, the amount was 250 times more than what the International Organisation needed to protect human health.
    • It is estimated that tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) is currently responsible for the death of about six million people across the world each year.

 

  1. The International Monetary Fund has released its April 2019 Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR) which states that there continues to be a high stock of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) in India.
    • GFSR is a semi-annual report by IMF.

BANKING AND ECONOMY

  1. As per the recommendation of Committee on Currency Movement chaired by DK Mohanty, RBI released guidelines for banks to set up New Currency Chests, which include minimum area of 1,500 square feet for strong room.
    • The new chests should have a processing capacity of 6 lakh pieces of banknotes per day.
    • For those situated in the hilly/ inaccessible places, capacity of 1 lakh pieces of banknotes per day.
    • The currency chests should have Chest Balance Limit of Rs 1,000 crore, subject to ground realities and reasonable restrictions.
    • Currency chests are branches of selected banks authorised by the RBI to stock rupee notes and coins.

 

  1. The Bombay Stock Exchange has signed an MoU with HDFC Bank with an objective to strengthen the BSE Startups platform.
    • BSE is the first exchange to have launched the Start Up platform.

 

  1. Dream11 has become the first online gaming platform to enter Unicorn Club after receiving secondary investment from Steadview Capital.
    • A unicorn is a privately held startup company with a current valuation of US$1 billion or more.

 

  1. Dubai based Emirates NDB and its Shari’ah-compliant unit, Emirates Islamic Bank have become the World’s first Islamic bank to launch banking via WhatsApp.

 

  1. According to IMF estimates in World Economic Outlook 2019, India’s economy is expected to grow at 3% growth in FY20 and to 7.5% in FY21.
    • As per IMF, India’s economy grew 7.1% in FY19.
    • Reserve Bank of India last week cut its growth forecast to 7.2% for FY20 fiscal and 7.4% for FY21.

  1. Vikramjit Singh Sahney has been elected as the new President of International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) – India.
  2. Karnam Sekar will take over as MD and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank from July 1, 2019.
  3. Abdelkader Bensalah has been appointed as Algeria’s First new President in 20 years by the Lawmakers of Algeria.
  4. Justice Vikram Nath has been appointed as the first Chief Justice of new Andhra Pradesh High Court at Amaravati.

IMPORTANT DAYS

  1. World Homeopathy Day is observed each year on April 10 which is the birthday of Dr Samuel Hahnemann who discovered Homeopathy in 1796.

  1. ‘Dost Education’, India’s education technology startup has bagged a $25,000 tech prize – Next Billion Edtech Prize 2019, along with two other winners from Tanzania and Egypt.
    • The startup was awarded for its ability to empower parents to take charge of their child’s early education by creating short, friendly audio content that is sent to them via their mobile phones.

SPORTS

  1. Indian captain Virat Kohli was named the ‘Leading Cricketer in the World’ for the third time in a row in 2019’s edition of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.
    • Smriti Mandhana was the Leading Cricketer in the women’s game for the year 2018.

 

MISCELLANEOUS

  1. Blue, the human-friendly robot conceived and built by researchers at the University of California uses Artificial Intelligence to master intricate human tasks.

 

  1. Indian Institute of Technology Madras has established a ‘Cold Spray’ SMART (Surface Modification and Additive Research Technologies) Laboratory in collaboration with General Electric (GE).
    • This is the first of its kind High-Pressure Cold Spray (HPCS) facility being installed in any academic institute in India.
    • The lab has been set up with the GOI’s support under its ‘Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana’ (UYAY) under the MHRD.

 

  1. NASA has managed to capture the first ever photo of a supermassive black hole.
    • The black hole is located at the center of Messier 87 which is the largest galaxy as of now of about 54 million light-years away.
