  1. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a Central Monitoring Committee which will be headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel.
    • Purpose – to ensure the implementation of action plan meant for reducing pollution stretches across the country.

 

  1. A new report titled “Political Leaders Position and Action on Air Quality in India” has been released by Climate Trends, a Delhi-based communications strategy initiative.
    • The date in this report has been directly taken from WHO 2018 Urban Air Quality report which has already been covered.

 

  1. An app named Jagruk or ‘aware’ has been developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) for accessing 24x7 real-time consumer feedback on quality and availability of power from across the country in a bid to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

 

  1. As per the study by Bridge To India (BTI), an energy consultancy firm, India’s PV (Photovoltaic) waste volume is estimated to grow to 200,000 tonnes by 2030 and around 8 million tonnes by 2050.

 

  1. According to State of World Population 2019 report by the United Nations Population Fund, India’s population grew at an average annual rate of 1.2 per cent between 2010 and 2019 to 1.36 billion.
    • The report published the data on women’s (aged between 15-49 years) ability to make decisions over three key areas: sexual intercourse with their partner, Contraception use and Health care for the first time.
    • The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in the country dropped from 488 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1994 to 174 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2015.
    • The life expectancy at birth in 1969 was 47 years and in 2019, it is 69 years.
    • The world’s population rose to 7.715 billion in 2019, up from 7.633 billion in 2018.
    • China’s population stood at 1.42 billion in 2019, rising from 1.23 billion in 1994.
    • UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. It is formally named the United Nations Population Fund. It was created in 1969.

  1. Google has introduced a new open platform called “Anthos” to run and manage apps from anywhere.
    • Anthos not only allows customers to deploy Google Cloud in their own data centres but also gives them the flexibility to build, run and manage their workloads within their data centre, on Google Cloud, or other cloud provider.

 

  1. S. prosecutors announced charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, accusing him of conspiring with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to gain access to a government computer.

 

  1. European Union leaders agreed to extend the Brexit deadline until October 31, 2019.

  1. The Hong Kong’s Stock Market has surpassed Japan’s Stock Market to become the third largest stock market in terms of market capitalization with market cap of $5.78 trillion.
    • Japan’s Stock market capitalization – $5.76 trillion.
    • It is only behind US and China’s Stock market.

  1. April 12 has been declared as the International Day of Human Space Flight “to celebrate the venturing of mankind into a new era of space”.
    • 12 April 1961 was the date of the first human space flight, carried out by Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet citizen.

AWARDS

  1. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) or Namami Gange was awarded the “Public Water Agency of the Year Award” by Global Water Intelligence at the Global Water Summit held in London.
    • It’s a flagship programme launched in 2014 under the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation.

 

  1. Alice G. Vaidyan, Chairman and MD of the General Insurance Corporation of India has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of her work to promote insurance ties between India and the UK.

SPORTS

  1. Indian athlete – Deepa Malik, Rio Paralympics silver medallist, has been honoured with the New Zealand Prime Minister’s Sir Edmund Hillary Fellowship for 2019 in recognition of her “inspiring achievements”.
    • She won silver medal in Shot put event in 2016 Olympics.
    • She is the first Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympic Games.

 

  1. Manpreet Kaur, shot put player, has been banned for four years by National Anti Doping Agency of India after failing a series of drug tests in 2017.
    • She won the Gold Medal in the Asian Championship 2017 but will have to give away the medal now.

MISCELLANEOUS

  1. Scientists from the University of Edinburgh of Scotland have discovered the existence of the state using powerful computer simulations known as the Chain-Melted state.
    • When atoms are both solid and liquid at the same time, then it is the chain-melted state.
