  1. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will be commissioning a study to assess the climate risks faced by 12 Himalayan States.
    • According to Vulnerability Index’ of last year, eight key parameters were identified to generate scores.
    • Assam and Mizoram with a vulnerability score of 0.72 and 0.71 topped the vulnerability index.
    • The 12 states are Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, hilly districts of West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

    • Erode is in Tamil Nadu.


  1. The government has warned Twitter activists of 7-year jail term and financial penalties if failed to act to remove content and accounts that are ‘objectionable and inflammatory’.
    • They would face action under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
    • Section 69A – Issue directions to block the content on online platforms in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, friendly relations with foreign States.


  1. As per the statistics of the of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, following aspects have been highlighted about Women in Politics
    • The percentage of female elected Heads of State dropped from 7.2 per cent to 6.6 per cent from 2017 to 2018.
    • The percentage of female heads of Government dropped from 5.7 per cent to 5.2 per cent from 2017 to 2018.


  1. The 23 opposition parties have demanded random verification of at least 50% Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) using Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in every Assembly segment or constituency.
    • VVPAT is an independent verification printer machine which allows voters to verify if their vote has gone to the intended candidate.


  1. The Bannerghatta National Park’s Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ), which provides a regulated buffer zone around protected areas, will remain at 168.84 sqkm despite thousands of citizens objecting to the reduction of nearly 100 sqkm as compared to the original proposal.

  1. RBI has relaxed the norms for the ‘Trade Credit’
    • The trade credit limit for imports of capital and non-capital goods under the automatic route has been raised to $150 million.
    • Trade credits (TCs) refer to the credits extended by the overseas supplier, bank, financial institution and other permitted recognised lenders for maturity for imports of capital and non-capital goods permissible.

  1. The State Bank of India has launched ‘Doorstep Banking’ service for
    • Senior citizen customers over 70 years of age

    • The cost for availing these services would be Rs 100 for each financial transaction and Rs 60 for each non-financial transaction.

  1. The Reserve Bank of India has categorized IDBI Bank as a Private Sector Bank with effect from January 21, 2019.
    • The decision has been taken after Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is acquired 51 per cent of the total paid-up equity share capital of the bank.
    • The IDBI Bank was categorised in the sub-group ‘other public sector banks’ by the RBI in April 2005.


  1. Aviva Life Insurance announced the launch of ‘Wings’, a specially designed mentorship program to empower the female workforce.
    • The program is an initiative of the SHE division of the company, for mentoring all the women employees.


  1. The SBI, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank continue to be in the Reserve Bank of India’s list of Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs) for 2018.
    • D-SIBs are required to maintain higher capital as compared to other banks.
    • The additional Common Equity Tier 1 core capital requirement in case of the State Bank of India applicable from April 1 has been prescribed at 0.6% of Risk Weighted Assets (RWAs) while for the other two banks it is 0.4%.
