NATIONAL NEWS

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a Nature Center on the 4th International Day of Yoga at New York City.
    • The centre is called ‘YO1 Nature Cure Center’.
    • YO1, which means youthful in Sanskrit, is the first of its kind nature cure center in America.
  1. Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Paperless Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi.
    • Once ready, the new building will house Department of Commerce.
    • It will be a completely paperless office with state of the art facilities such as smart access control, central air-conditioning, video conferencing, and completely networked systems.
  1. A Guinness World Record was created in Rajasthan’s Kota city, where more than 05 lakh people performed yoga to mark International Yoga Day.
  1. Mongolia launched construction of its first oil refinery that is funded by India.
    • It will be capable of processing 5 million tonnes of crude oil each year That is about 30,000 barrels per day (bpd).
  1. Tech giant Google announced the rollout of an offline mode for users on Android.
    • They are introducing another way for Chrome on Android users in India, along with more than 100 countries including Nigeria, Indonesia, and Brazil, to surf the web with Chrome on Android devices – even without a constant internet connection.
  1. The Gujarat Government announced the launch of the Rs 870-crore pilot project of Suryashakti Kisan Yojana (SKY).
    • This is a first of its kind in the country.
    • This would cover, through solar power generation, 12,400 farmers in 33 districts through 137 feeders.
    • Using this project the farmers would use solar energy for irrigation and they can sell the surplus power via grid.
  1. WWF-India has launched its first-ever comic book named ‘The Great Indian Nature Trail with Uncle Bikky’.
    • The book appreciates the geographical diversity of India.
    • It follows the travels of its protagonists Uncle Bikky, Chunmun and their dog Duggu.
  1. According to United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2018 report, number of hungry people in world has risen for first time in more than decade.
    • There are now approximately 38 million more undernourished people in the world, rising from 777 million in 2015 to 815 million in 2016.
    • The report is an overview of progress towards achieving 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDG), which consists of 17 goals and 169 targets.
    • The number of people living on less than $2 a day declined from 9% of the world’s population in 2000 to 9.2% in 2017.

 

BANKING AND ECONOMY

  1. HDFC Bank, has featured at 60th rank in the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands 
    • Google and Apple retained the number 1 and 2 spots in the rankings, followed by Amazon, which moved into the #3 position ahead of Microsoft.

 

APPOINTMENTS

  1. Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, will succeed Sunil Bharti Mittal, the founder of India’s largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel, as the honorary Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce.
  2. The Appointments Committee of the cabinet has appointed Arijit Basu as the new Managing Director of State Bank of India.

  1. International Widows’ Day is a global awareness day that takes place annually on 23rd June.
    • The United Nations General Assembly decided to observe International Widows’ Day on 23 June each year to give special recognition to the situation of widows of all ages and across regions and cultures.

  1. Indian army announced that The 7 Garhwal Rifles Infantry Battalion Grouppart of UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan was awarded the United Nations Medal for “selfless service”.
  1. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was awarded the ‘Chief Minister of the Year’ award for her extraordinary work in e-governance, at the 52nd Skoch Summit, inNew Delhi.

  1. Commonwealth Games 2018 gold-medal winning shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, was honored as the Sportsperson of the Year for 2017 by the Sports Illustrated India magazine.
