NATIONAL NEWS

  1. India will be the host country for celebrations of World Environment Day 2018 which is celebrated on June 5 every year
    • The theme for this year is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
  2. PM Narendra Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina inaugurated Bangladesh Bhawan at Shanti Niketan in West Bengal.
    • This is the first time in Indian history, that two prime ministers attended a convocation ceremony.
  3. Six-days ASEAN India Film Festival launched in New Delhi.
    • It was organized by Ministry of External Affairs (ASEAN Multilateral Division) as part of the series of events to commemorate 25 years of ASEAN and India relations.
    • Tagline – Friendship through Films
    • ASEAN is a regional organization that aims to promote intergovernmental cooperation and economic integration amongst its members. It consists of 10 member countries- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. 
  4. ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav’, cultural festival was inaugurated in Uttarakhand.
    • Organised by Ministry of Culture.
    • It is the ninth edition of this festival.
  5. Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO)has asked its field offices to credit 55% rate of interest for 2017-18 into the Provident Fund accounts of around 5 crore subscribers
    • According to an order issued by the EPFO, the Labour Ministry has conveyed approval to credit 8.55% rate of interest for last fiscal.
  6. PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the 2400 MW first phase of NTPC’s Patratu Super Thermal Power Project in Jharkhand.
    • This project is a 74: 26 Joint Venture between Government of Jharkhand and Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (PVUN).
  7. National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) sanctioned Rs. 5000 crore for the Rajasthan government farm loan waiver.
    • The Rajasthan government on its budgetary speech had announced a one-time loan waiver for up to Rs. 50000 for small and marginal farmers provided by cooperative banks.
  8. Telangana announced a unique life insurance scheme for farmers.
    • As per the scheme, the government will offer life insurance facility of 5 lakh rupees to the nominee, after the death of the insured farmer.
    • The total premium will be paid by the government to the insurance agency. The nominee will receive the amount within 10 days of placing the claim after the farmer’s death.
    • Farmers aged between 18 and 60are eligible to register for this scheme.
  9. Manipur has become the first state in the North-east and the third state in India to have solar toilets.
    • Earlier, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have had solar toilets installed.
  10. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has created Women Safety Division to address issues related to security of women comprehensively amid rising concerns over women safety.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  1. The president of Columbia Juan Manuael Santos announced that Columbia has formally joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
    • Columbia is the only country in Latin America to be a part of NATO.
    • NATO is an intergovernmental military alliance

  1. ICICI bank launched its innovation lab for digital business.
    • This team is headed by former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mr. Rohan Angrish
    • Objective is to create technology from scratch and help better digital business.
    • The lab will function on a point strategy: ‘ Run, Evolve & Imagine’.
  2. Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)has released all the 7 e-filling forms for the taxpayers.
    • ITR-1is called ‘Sahaj’ and is for the salaried person earning up to Rs. 50 lakh only
    • ITR-2 is for the individuals and ‘HUF’ having income from profits and gains in business including NRIs.
    • ITR-3 and ITR-can be filled by HUFs having the income under the head business and profession.
  3. Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC) has launched a 40 day long cancer screening program and awareness initiative on harmful effects of tobacco consumption
    • World No Tobacco Day 2018 – 31 May 2018

  1. Ganeshi Lal has been appointed as the Governor of Odisha.
  2. Kummanam Rajasekharan has been appointed as the governor of Mizoram.
  3. The Caribbean island of Barbados has elected Mia Mottley as its first female Prime Minister since gaining independence from the UK in 1966.
  4. Lebanese President Michel Aoun announced that Saad Hariri won the rank of the Prime Minister for the third term.
  5. The boards of Max Financial Services and Max Life Insurance appointed Mr. Sachil Vachani as the Director.
