  1. The Union Minister for Human Resource Development Shri Prakash Javadekar formally launched two schemes –
    • IMPRESS – “Impactful Policy Research in Social Sciences”
    • The objective of this scheme is to identify and fund research proposals in social sciences with maximum impact on the governance and society.
    • SPARC – “Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration
    • The SPARC scheme aims at improving the research ecosystem of India’s higher educational institutions by facilitating academic and research collaborations between Indian Institutions and the best institutions in the world.
  1. According to a report named QS Asia University Rankings 2019by Quacquarelli Symonds, India doubled their presence in the ranking.
    • India has the third largest number of universities and institutes, after mainland China (112) and Japan (89).
    • IIT-Bombay remains the highest ranked institution. It moved one place to the 33rd position.
    • National University of Singapore has been assessed as Asia’s best university.
    • It is followed by University of Hong KongNanyang Technological University (Singapore), Tsinghua University (China) and Peking University(China).

 

 

 

  1. According to the 7th edition ‘Word Cooperative Monitor’ report 2018, fertilizer major IFFCO has been ranked as the biggest cooperative in the world.

  1. Union Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the 3-day 10th Edition of BIOFACH INDIA, the largest show on the“Organic Sector” in India.
    • The theme of the BIOFACH INDIA conference being “Enhancing export of organic products trade from India – strategies and synergies”. 
  1. Indian Railways announced the world’s highest railway line Bilaspur-Manali-Leh Line, that will run along the India-China border.
    • The rail line will have the highest road point of 5,360 metres above mean sea level.
    • Keylong station on the route will be built inside a tunnel at a height of 3,000 metres, which will be the first station in India to be built inside tunnel.

 

 

 

  1. According to survey findings of The Teen Age Girls (TAG) Report, conducted by Project Nanhi Kali which compares the performance of each State based on the status of their teenage girls.
    • Kerala topped the list followed by Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur and Himachal Pradesh.
    • While the top three cities were found to be Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru.
    • This is the nation’s first report on what it means to be a teenage girl in India.
    • According to the report, there are 80 million teenage girls in the country at present.
  1. The first indigenously overhauled Sukhoi Su-30MKI supersonic aircraft was recently handed over to the Indian Air Force.
    • The aircraft was overhauled in country’s only fighter aircraft repair depot “Ojhar” in Maharashtra.
    • Sukhoi Aircraft was developed by Russia. The license for building it was given to Indian Air Force in the past 2 decades.
  1. Union Environment Ministry has recently given nod to DRDO to set up its surveillance system including Long Range Missile Test Range in Rutland island in South Andaman.
    • As of now, long-range missile tests are being carried out from the Odisha coast and are tracked by naval vessels.

 

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

 

  1. NATO’s (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)Trident Juncture 2018 military exercise began in Norway.
    • This is NATO’s biggest military exercise since the Cold War.
    • It aims to train the Alliance to mobilize quickly to defend an ally under attack.
  1. Pakistan announced that it would send a human to space for the first time in 2022 with the help of China.
    • An agreement has been signed between Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and a Chinese company.

  1. Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena appointed former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

    • This day highlights and celebrates the art of animation.

 

  1. The Central Vigilance Commission observes the Vigilance Awareness Week every year during the week in which birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (31st October) falls.
    • The 2018 Vigilance Awareness Week is being observed from 29th October to 3rd November 2018.
    • The Theme of the Vigilance Awareness Week 2018 is – Eradicate Corruption-Build a New India.

  1. Professor M.S. Swaminathan — founder of the S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) — was awarded the first World Agriculture Prize at the 11th Global Agriculture Leadership Summit which was held in New Delhi.

  1. Roopam Sharma, a 23-year old Indian scientist, won the World Health Summit Startup award, 2018, at an annual event of the health summit in Berlin.
    • He won this award for his invention, Manovue – the world’s first intelligent personal assisting system for the visually impaired.
  1. Malayalam author Benyamin’s novel Jasmine Days won JCB Prize for Literature.
    • The award consists of a trophy and 25 lakhs as prize money.
  1. UN Human Rights Prize 2018 announced
