  1. According to International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Study, air pollution due to crop residue burning in northern India causes an estimated economic loss of USD 30 billion annually.
    • Crop residue burning is a leading risk factor for Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) particularly in children less than five years of age.
    • In Haryana, 5.4% of surveyed individuals reported suffering from ARI) whereas the reported ARI symptoms in southern States was only 0.1%.
    • The study warns that in next five years economic loss because of burning of crop residue is likely to be around $190 billion, which is nearly 1.7% of India`s gross domestic product (GDP).
