  1. Janibili Drinking Water Project was inaugurated for Berhampur and rural areas of Ganjam district in state of Odisha to resolve the drinking water crisis.
    • Along with this, Smart park Scheme was also launched for 114 urban centres in the State under which 200 parks will be developed (launched as a part of ‘Unnati’ Yojana).
  1. As per the audit firm Grant Thomson, transactions worth more than Rs 13,000 crore at Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) could be linked to irregularities such as conflicts of interest, inadequate risk assessment and deviation from banking norms.
    • Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), a fraud-investigating agency in its interim report has alleged that the non-banking finance company IL&FS had borrowed short term loan from the market and lent long term to group companies that were struggling to raise funds, risking its own financial position and in violation of the Companies Act.

  1. Troops of the Central Industrial Security Force set a Guinness world record covering 2 Km non-stop in ”single Line Bicycle Parade” to mark the 50 years of the paramilitary force.
    • The new record was created at the Yamuna Expressway in Noida, with personnel of the central force riding 1,327 bicycles.
    • Earlier, this record was held by Hubballi Bicycle Club of India which had 1,235 bicycles in single chain.
  1. The historic Veerabhadraswamy Temple, a fiery form of Lord Siva is located in Motupalli Village in the Prakasam district of Andhra-Pradesh.

  1. ‘April 2019–March 2020’ was declared as Construction-Technology year at two-day Expo-cum Conference on Construction Technology India 2019 (CTI-2019) was held in New Delhi.
    • Purpose – Emphasis the use of Advanced Technology to meet housing demands.
    • It is the Part of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) which is a Central Government scheme with the aim to provide Housing for All in urban areas by 2022.

 

  1. ‘Plastic Waste-Free India’ Anthem has been produced by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Smriti Manch (PDUSM) as a part of a campaign to make India plastic-free by 2022.
    • It stressed on strengthening plastic waste management and recycling ecosystem in the country.
    • PDUSM is a non-profit organisation which claims to be working on various social and environmental issues.
    • The anthem is launched in seven languages — Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada.

  1. The 8th edition of India-Bangladesh joint military exercise – Sampriti 2019 was hosted at Tangail in Bangladesh.
    • The joint exercise is aimed to increase mutual cooperation, bonhomie and camaraderie between the armies of India and Bangladesh.

  1. The foundation stone for a manufacturing unit of the AK-203/103 assault rifle was laid in the Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh.
    • The AK-203 is advanced version of the legendary AK-47 rifle.
    • New Delhi and Moscow signed an inter-governmental agreement to build the AK-203 in India.

 

  1. Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uber to provide free healthcare services to Uber drivers.
    • Drivers have to pay Rs 30 to get Ayushman Bharat Card and can avail the benefits – no charges for pre-hospitalisation, hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation expenses.

  1. According to International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Study, air pollution due to crop residue burning in northern India causes an estimated economic loss of USD 30 billion annually.
    • Crop residue burning is a leading risk factor for Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) particularly in children less than five years of age.
    • In Haryana, 5.4% of surveyed individuals reported suffering from ARI) whereas the reported ARI symptoms in southern States was only 0.1%.
    • The study warns that in next five years economic loss because of burning of crop residue is likely to be around $190 billion, which is nearly 1.7% of India`s gross domestic product (GDP).

 

  1. India will tie up with 4 nations – Bhutan, Nepal, Indonesia and Malaysia to increase the population of three species of Asian Rhinos namely Greater One-horned Rhinoceros, Javan Rhino, and Sumatran Rhino.
    • The five rhino range nations signed a declaration ‘The Declaration on Asian Rhinos 2019’ for the conservation and protection of the species.

 

  1. National Common Mobility card dubbed as “One Nation One Card” was launched to make different kinds of payments including metro, bus, suburban railways, smart city and retail shopping.
    • The card is similar to any RuPay debit/credit card, which will be available with more than 25 banks.
    • A cardholder can also avail 5 percent cash back at ATMs and 10 percent cash back at merchant outlets while travelling abroad.
    • It has been launched as part of the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP 2006) by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

 

  1. Canada ranked as the best country out of the 151 nations evaluated on the basis of 10 indicators according to the Global Wellness Index published by investment firm Letter One.
    • US has been ranked at 37th position.
    • South Africa comes in dead last, below Ukraine, Egypt and Iraq.

  1. According to the oncologists, India lacks in cancer treatment and existing cancer care facilities are not enough to handle increasing burden of cancer cases.
    • According to the National Cancer Grid, there are only 62 dedicated cancer care hospitals in the country, including both regional and national facilities.
    • More than 1,157,294 new cancer patients are registered every year.
    • According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, 413,519 men and 371,302 women died of cancer.
    • 9.81% of men and 9.42% of women are at risk of developing cancer before 75 years of age.
    • According to National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR), 25 million people in India live with cancer as of March 2018.

 

  1. India ranked first with the score of 133 among the 63 countries in the Consumer Confidence Index published on Conference Board Global Consumer Confidence Survey conducted in collaboration with Nielsen Holdings.
    • Philippines and US ranked at second and third position respectively.
    • An index reading above 100 points denotes optimism.
    • Parameters – Optimism toward local job prospects, State of personal finances and Spending Intentions in the next 12 months.

  1. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) launched 22 permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) stations across India to identify seismically hazardous zones and encourage mapping activities.
    • Recently (2018), the organization launched the platform called “Bhuvisamvad” under the Ministry of Mines to facilitate interaction between geo-scientists and university and college students.

  1. India participated for the first time in 46th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) which was hosted by Abu Dhabi.
    • It was a two-day gathering dedicated to discuss ways to combat hate speech, extremism and conflict in the region.
