NATIONAL NEWS

  1. Phayeng Village in Manipur (Imphal West district) has become India’s first carbon-positive settlement.
    • Phayeng is a scheduled caste village of the Chakpa community.
    • A village is given the carbon-positive tag if it sequesters more carbon than it emits, slowing the accumulation of greenhouse gases and mitigating the effects of climate change.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  1. The first-ever Global coalition on Clean and Efficient cooling was launched at the First Global Conference on Synergies between the 2030 Agenda and Paris Agreement, which concluded in Copenhagen, Denmark.
    • It is supported by the UN, Climate and Clean Air Coalition, the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).

BANKING AND ECONOMY

  1. RBI has reduced the current Repo Rate from 6.25% to 6% as part of First Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy of FY20 (As of April 5, 2019).
    • Also, RBI cuts GDP growth forecast to 7.2% from 7.4% for 2019-20.
    • Reverse Repo Rate : 5.75%
    • Marginal Standing Facility Rate : 6.25%
    • Bank Rate : 6.25%
    • CRR – 4%
    • SLR – 19.25%

 

  1. Fitch Rating kept the India’s Rating sovereign rating unchanged for 13th year in a row at the lowest investment grade of BBB- with a stable outlook.
    • The expected GDP forecast by Fitch Is 6.8% in FY20 and 7.1% in FY21.
    • It was last in August 2006, Fitch changed rating from ‘BB+’ to ‘BBB-‘.

 

  1. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and its wholly-owned arm India INX (India International Exchange) have entered into MoU with the Russian bourse Moscow Exchange (MOEX).
    • It will help in connecting their investors and facilitating a capital formation platform on a larger scale.
    • This is the first time when any Indian exchange has entered into an agreement with a Russian exchange.
    • India INX – It is India’s first international exchange in International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) located at the Gujarat International Finance-Tec City (GIFT City).

 

  1. Lakshmi Vilas Bank has announced its merger with Non-Banking Finance Company Indiabulls Housing Finance.
    • The merged entity will be known as ‘Indiabulls Lakshmi Vilas Bank’.

APPOINTMENTS

  1. Vipin Anand has been appointed as the Managing Director of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
  2. Mayoori Kango, a former Hindi film actress has been appointed as Head of Industry – Agency partnerships in Google India.
  3. Chandra Shekhar Rajan has been appointed as Managing Director of IL&FS.
  4. Davis Malpass was unanimously appointed as the 13th President of the World Bank.
  5. Vikram Kirloskar was appointed as the President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the period 2019-20.
  6. Keshav Murugesh has been appointed as the Chairman of NASSCOM (National Association of Software and services companies).
  7. Lori Lightfoot, a 56 year old former federal Prosecutor and practicing lawyer has been elected as the Chicago’s first Black Women Mayor.
  8. Justice T B N Radhakrishnan sworn-in as the new Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.

IMPORTANT DAYS

  1. The 56th edition of National Maritime day was observed on April 5.
    • Theme – “Indian Ocean- An Ocean of Opportunity”.
    • It was first celebrated on 5th April, 1964.

 

  1. The United Nations’ (UN) International day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is observed annually on April 6 to recognize the power of sport in promoting peace and erasing cultural barriers worldwide.

 

  1. The World Health Day is observed worldwide on 7th of April.
    • Theme for 2019 – “Universal Health Coverage: : everyone, everywhere”.
    • The World Health Day is celebrated on April 7, 1948 to commemorate the establishment of WHO which came into being to address vital health care issues.

  1. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has honoured PM Narendra Modi with the “Order of Zayed”, its highest civilian award.
    • The honour was conferred on Modi for his efforts to boost bilateral ties with the country.

  1. At the ESPN India awards for 2018, PV Sindhu was conferred with the Sportsperson of Year award in female category and Neeraj Chopra was conferred with the Sportsperson of the year award in Male category.

  1. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA has dropped an explosive from its Hayabusa2 spacecraft to carve out cavity or material from the asteroid Ryugu for scientific research.
    • It dropped a small explosive box which sent a copper ball the size of a baseball slamming into the asteroid.

 

  1. A book authored by documentary filmmaker and former DDG of Doordarshan Sharad Dutt – “Kundan: Saigal’s Life & Music” was released.
    • Kundanlal Saigal was an Indian singer and actor who is considered the first superstar of the Hindi film industry.

 

  1. Dr. Viharidas Gopaldas Patel, an eminent economist and father of entrepreneurship movement in India, passed away in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
