  1. President Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to Guinea, Benin and Gambia (all West African nations).

India has signed 4 MoU with Benin

Cultural Exchange Programme between the two countries for the years 2019-2023.

MoU on Cooperation in the field of Export Credit and Investment Insurance.

MoU for participation in e- VBAB Network Project.

Agreement on mutual exemption from the visa requirement for Diplomatic, Official/Service Passports holders.

e- VBAB Network Project is an agreement between Ministry of External Affairs and Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd (signed in 2018) for the implementation of e-VidyaBharati and e-AarogyaBharati (e-VBAB) Network Project.

 

India’s MoU with Gambia

India’s bilateral trade with Gambia crossed $200 million in 2018-19, (nearly 100% increase in the last two years).

India granted $500,000 to Gambia for skill development and cottage industry projects along with concessional lines of credit worth $78.5 million.

Another line of credit of $92 million was also extended.

India and Gambia signed MoU for cooperation in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy.

India has given Line of Credit (Loc) worth $170 million to Guinea for Conakry Water Supply Project.

Guinea has awarded President Ram Nath Kovind with ‘The National Order of Merit’ (Guinea’s highest honour).

  • Budget 2019: – India will launch 18 new missions across Africa.

 

  1. Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Bill has been passed by Rajya Sabha which repeals the Article 370 and 35A.
  • It also seeks to form two new Union Territories (one- J&K with legislature and second- Ladakh without legislature).
  • Article 370 was enacted in 1954 and Article 35A was added to the Constitution through a Presidential Order- The Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 1954.

 

  1. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has exempted armoured and specialized vehicles of armed and paramilitary forces from adhering to BS-VI norms w.e.f. April 2020.

 

  1. Ministry of Environment has approved the Kosi-Mechi Interlinking project for interlinking of Kosi and Mechi rivers of Bihar at a cost of Rs 4,900 crore.
  • The first major river interlinking project- Ken-Betwa project– of India has been initiated in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Functions: – It will divert surplus water of Kosi river to Mechi River (a tributary of Mahananda river) of Mahananda basin.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  1. United Kingdom and USA have formed a collision- “International Maritime Security Mission” to protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz (from Iran’s “piracy attacks”).
  • No other nation has been included in this mission yet.

 

  1. 34th Asian Summit was held in Bangkok, Thailand under the theme of – Advancing Partnership For Sustainability.
  • The 2019 presidency of ASEAN is with Thailand.
  • Conclusion: – It was decided to set up ASEAN-Japan Cybersecuriy Capacity-Building Centre (AJCCBC) in Thailand among other things.
  • ASEAN Summit is a biannual meeting held twice in a year, and next summit will also be held in Thailand.
  • 26th Asean Regional Forum was also held in Bangkok, Thailand.

 

  1. World Resources Institute’s “Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas” shows that nearly a quarter of world’s population in 17 countries are facing extremely high water stress, bordering on the condition of taps running dry.

  1. Ministry of Consumer Affairs has disclosed the rules of draft e-commerce policy under which following provisions are mandated: –

The e-tailers (e-retailers) have to refund the amount to customers within 14 days of such request. And make an effective procedure to resolve customer grievances.

E-tailers have to disclose all the details about their suppliers on their website including the terms of contract between them and the seller.

Personal data of customers should be protected under Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008.

Also, sellers need to adhere to Legal Metrology (amendment) rules 2017 for pre-packaged commodities.

According to Morgan Stanley’s report released in Feb 2019, the e-commerce sector in India is estimated to reach $230 billion by 2028, accounting for 10% of India’s retail market as India is adding one Internet user every 3 seconds.

  • The provisions are open for comment till September. After finalization, these provisions will be added to Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

 

  1. Reliance industries has acquired the startup Fynd (which is a Google funded firm) for Rs 295 crore.

 

  1. RBI has imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 crore on Oriental Bank of Commerce and 50 lakhs on Punjab National Bank for delay in reporting the frauds of Kingfisher Airlines under the Banking Regulation Act (BRA), 1949.
  • A total of 9 banks (including PNB and OBC) have been fined by RBI for delay in reporting frauds under the BRA Act.

 

  1. According to “Top 100 Retailers in Asia 2019” report released by Euromonitor International, Walmart Inc is the top retail firm in India in 2018.
  • Amazon is India’s second largest retailer of India followed by Future Group at 3rd position and Reliance Group at 4th position.
  • In the Asian region, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd is the top retail company, followed by JD.com Inc, and Japan’s Seven and Seven & I Holdings Co Ltd.
  • Total 100 countries were assessed in this report.
