NATIONAL NEWS

  1. According to IQAir AirVisual 2018 World Air Quality Report, Gurugram, in Haryana, topped with an average annual Particulate Matter quality of 135 g/m3 the list of most polluted cities.
    • Bangladesh emerged as the most polluted in terms of countries followed by Pakistan and India
    • Delhi was at the eleventh position.
    • India’s annual guidelines range from 40-60 g/m3, depending on whether they are residential or industrial areas.
    • The ranking is one of its kind study that relies on ground-based sensors located in 3,000 cities from 73 countries.

 

 

  1. As per National Annual Rural Sanitation Survey (NARSS) 2018-19 Survey, 93.1% of rural Indian households now have access to toilets in comparison to 77% last year.
    • It was conducted between November 2018 and February 2019, covering 92,040 households in 6,136 villages.
    • The survey was commissioned by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
    • 96.5% of people who had access to toilets, use them.
    • Only four states — Goa, Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal — falling short of 100% coverage.
    • The survey is conducted by an Independent Verification Agency under the World Bank support project to the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G),
    • The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which was launched in 2014, aims to completely eliminate open defecation in the country by October 2, 2019.

 

  1. A new scheme – ‘Mukhya Mantri Karigar Sahayata’ has been launched in Odisha for providing financial assistance to craftsmen.
    • All those craftsmen with 10 years of experience with annual income below Rs.1 lakh are eligible to get an assistance of 800 per month.
    • The craftsmen above 80 years of age having same annual income and same experience would get Rs 1000 per month allowance.

 

  1. As per the research by Cable.co.uk., India has the cheapest mobile data in the world at Rs 18.5 or $0.26 for 1GB compared to global average of $8.53 or around Rs 600 per GB.
    • The research compared mobile data charges in 230 countries from 6,313 mobile data plans between the period of October 23 and November 28 last year.
    • The most expensive country at $75.20 for 1GB data is Zimbabwe.
    • India is followed by Kyrgyzstan, Kazakstan and Ukraine where mobile data rate per GB are $0.27, $0.49, and $0.51 respectively.

 

  1. According to Knight Frank Prime International Residential Index (PIRI 100), Mumbai is the 16th most expensive Prime Residential Property market in the world.
    • Philippines ranked at the first position.
    • In terms of Wealth on Index, Mumbai was the 12th most wealthy city improving from 17th position in 2017.
    • London is at number 1 spot replacing the position from New York in terms of wealth.

 

  1. Delhi Government has launched a commute planning mobile app, ONE Delhi, which can be used to plan travel across multiple government transport facilities such as metros and buses.

 

  1. Azaadi Ke Diwane’ museum has been inaugurated on the Red Fort premises which is dedicated to the unsung heroes of the country’s freedom struggle.
    • It is built by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)
    • The museum is the fifth in a series after —Subhash Chandra Bose Museum and INA museum, the Yaad-e-Jallian museum, the Museum on 1857 (on the country’s first war of Independence) the Drishyakala (a museum on Indian Art) — on the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters.
    • It is started in the series of Kranti Mandir to inspire the younger generation.

 

  1. A new scheme Yuvashree Plan II or Yuvashree Arpan has been launched in West Bengal to encourage entrepreneurship among youth.
    • Under the Yuvashree Arpan Scheme, around fifty thousand Youths who have passed out of ITI and polytechnic institutes will be eligible to get financial support of Rs One Lakh from the state MSME department to set up their own business initiatives.

 

  1. The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has amended the Hazardous and other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 to ban the import of solid plastic waste
    • It is in line with the principles of sustainable development.
    • India’s plastic imports had increased from 12,000 tonnes in 2016-17 FY to 48,000 in the 2017-18 FY.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

  1. The U.S. intends to end preferential trade terms for India under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) programme.
    • The GSP programme sets zero tariffs for certain goods from a set of 121 developing countries to foster their trade and economic development.
    • It accounts for some $5.6 billion of India’s exports to the U.S., making India the largest GSP beneficiary.

  1. The United States and South Korea announced the inauguration of a new exercise known as Dong Maeng or ‘Alliance’.
    • The exercise is the modification for the recent exercises “Foal Eagle” and “Key Resolve”.

 

  1. The government has given a nod to the IDBI Bank to handle import and export transactions with Iran.
    • It would help in promoting two-way trade amid US sanctions on the Persian Gulf nation.
    • Earlier, UCO Bank used to handle the payments during the previous sanctions.
    • Iran is India’s third-largest oil supplier after Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

 

  1. Malaysia has become the 124th member of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
    • It is the world’s only independent judicial body with jurisdiction over persons charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

 

  1. Google has launched a new app called Bolo to help students in India read in Hindi and English and work as a tutor of sorts.
    • The app includes an Assistant called Diya which encourages children with their reading, understanding skills.

 

  1. As per the latest report by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC), India has been referred as Key Hub for Illicit Drug Trade.

 

  1. Richest Indian Mukesh Ambani ranked at 13th position on the Forbes World’s Billionaire list with USD 50 billion wealth, jumping six positions.
    • The list was topped by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and family with USD 131 billion wealth followed by Bill Gates with USD 96.5 bn in the 2nd place.

  1. World Bank shall provide $250 million support to the National Rural Economic Transformation Project (NRETP) in order to boost rural income across 13 states on India.
    • It aims to promote women-owned and women-led farm and non-farm enterprises.

 

  1. Hitachi Payment Services Pvt Ltd and State Bank of India launched their merchant-acquiring joint venture – SBI Payment Services Pvt Ltd (SBIPSPL) for establishing a digital payments platform for India and other countries in the region.
    • SBI has a 74% stake in the joint venture and 26% is with Hitachi Payment Services.

 

  1. According to data compiled by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the unemployment rate rose to 2% in February 2019, the worst in 28 months.
    • The total number of employed persons in February 2019 is estimated at 400 million against 406 million in the year-ago period and 407.5 million employed in February 2017.

  1. The World Day of Fight Against Sexual Exploitation is observed on March 4 every year.
    • It aims to spread awareness about the prevalent sexual exploitation, largely among women and children.

 

  1. National Security Day also known as Rashtriya Suraksha Diwas was celebrated on 4th March to praise the work of security forces such as army officers, para-military, policemen and commandos.

  1. National Safety Day (NSC)is observed on 4th March every year by National Safety Council of India.
    • Theme – “Cultivate and Sustain a safety culture for building nation”.

 

  1. World Wildlife Day is observed each year on March 3.
    • Theme 2019 – “Life Below Water: For people and planet”.
    • This is the first World Wildlife Day to focus on life below water.

    • It honours each year a living architect or architects whose work demonstrates talent and vision, as well as a contribution to humanity.

 

  1. Indore has been declared as the cleanest city as per the govt. cleanliness survey – Swachh Survekshan Awards 2019 for the third year on a row.
    • The awards have been distributed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation.
    • The survey covered 4,237 cities across India.
