Six friends M,N,O,P,Q and R are seated around a circular table facing centre. They came by different cars- Maruti, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Audi and BMW. They belong to six different cities- Hyderabad, Banglore, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata.

  • The person who came by Maruti, Honda and Hyundai neither belong to Hyderabad nor Banglore.
  • The person who belong to Chennai and Delhi neither came by Maruti or Honda.
  • M neither belongs to Hyderabad nor on the immediate left of the person who came by BMW.
  • The only person between Q and R came by Nissan.
  • P came by BMW, he belongs to Chennai and he is facing the person who came by Nissan.
  • The one who came by Maruti is seated opposite to the person came from Mumbai. The person who came from Chennai is on the immediate left of the one who came by Hyundai.
  • The one who came by Audi is on the immediate right of the person from Hyderabad but on the immediate left of the person who came by Honda.
  • O didn’t come by Honda. While R did not come by Maruti.

The given problem has two components, One being arrangement and other is the puzzle solving.

Let’s read the statements and proceed.

Statement 1 gives us the details about the people, cities and their cars.

Read statement 2, The person who came by Maruti, Honda and Hyundai neither belong to Hyderabad nor Bangalore.

To solve the puzzle part, we must form a table like,

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti
Honda
Hyundai
Nissan
BMW
Audi

And now we’ll put tick marks to eliminate or accept the probability of a match.

Based on statement 2 we can fill the table as,

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti       X       X
Honda       X       X
Hyundai       X       X
Nissan
BMW
Audi

Now, read statement 3, The person who belong to Chennai and Delhi neither came by Maruti or Honda

So, our table gets upgraded to,

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti       X       X     X     X
Honda       X       X     X     X
Hyundai       X       X
Nissan
BMW
Audi

We can also observe from the above table that only two cities left for Maruti and Honda people are Mumbai and Kolkata. Hence, Mumbai and Kolkata is off for other cars, hence, we get our table as

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti       X       X     X     X
Honda       X       X     X     X
Hyundai       X       X       X     X
Nissan       X     X
BMW       X     X
Audi       X     X

Statement 4 says, M neither belongs to Hyderabad nor on the immediate left of the person who came by BMW

This information can neither be put in table nor on our diagram, hence we form another section to write this information.

M – Hyderabad (x)

M – Left of BMW (x)

The cross(x) mark negates the validity of our information

Statement 5 says, The only person between Q and R came by Nissan.

We can place this info on our diagram.

Since, it is a circular arrangement, we can put Q and R anywhere.

6th statement, P came by BMW, he belongs to Chennai and he is facing the person who came by Nissan

So, we get,

We can also put our information from other section, i.e

M – Hyderabad (x)

M – Left of BMW (x)

So, we get,

And, our table becomes,

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti       X       X     X     X
Honda       X       X     X     X
Hyundai       X       X     X       X       X
Nissan     X       X       X
BMW       X       X       X     ü       X       X
Audi     X       X       X

This also gives us the information that Hyundai guy has only Delhi as his option left. Hence, we further get

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti       X       X     X     X
Honda       X       X     X     X
Hyundai       X       X     ü     X       X       X
Nissan     X     X       X       X
BMW       X       X     X     ü       X       X
Audi     X     X       X       X

7th statement says, The one who came by Maruti is seated opposite to the person came from Mumbai. The person who came from Chennai is on the immediate left of the one who came by Hyundai.

Now, we already know that Maruti comes from Mumbai or Kolkata, but this information says that Maruti is opposite to person from Mumbai, hence Maruti cannot come from Mumbai, hence it has to come from Kolkata. Hence, Honda owner should be from Mumbai.

We also get the info that person from Chennai is on the immediate left of one coming by Hyundai. Hence, on the right of P should sit owner of Hyundai.

So, our table and diagram should look like,

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti       X       X     X     X       X     ü
Honda       X       X     X     X     ü       X
Hyundai       X       X     ü     X       X       X
Nissan     X     X       X       X
BMW       X       X     X     ü       X       X
Audi     X     X       X       X

8th statement says, The one who came by Audi is on the immediate right of the person from Hyderabad but on the immediate left of the person who came by Honda

On a linear line, this information would look like,

Hyderabad   Audi   Honda

Now, we have to see where does such an arrangement fits on our diagram. We must use hit and trial method for that. Try doing that for three consecutive steps and you’ll end up coming with,

We also know that M is not from Hyderabad, other places are occupied by P and (Q or R), hence, only place left for M is Delhi one. We are also aware of the fact based out of table that Honda is from Mumbai, hence,

Our table also upgrades to,

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti       X       X     X     X       X     ü
Honda       X       X     X     X     ü       X
Hyundai       X       X     ü     X       X       X
Nissan     ü       X     X     X       X       X
BMW       X       X     X     ü       X       X
Audi       X     X     X       X       X

Gives us the info that, Audi comes from Bangalore, hence, final table is,

HyderabadBangaloreDelhiChennaiMumbaiKolkata
Maruti       X       X     X     X       X     ü
Honda       X       X     X     X     ü       X
Hyundai       X       X     ü     X       X       X
Nissan     ü       X     X     X       X       X
BMW       X       X     X     ü       X       X
Audi       X     ü     X     X       X       X

Only One type of car i.e. Maruti is not represented in the diagram. Incidentally, only one spot is left for it, hence,

Now, 9th statement says, O didn’t come by Honda. While R did not come by Maruti.

Since R did not come by Maruti, hence we can deduce from the given diagram that Q must have come from Maruti and R from Audi. We already know the cities for these cars, i.e. Kolkata for Maruti and Bangalore for Audi. And since O didn’t come from Honda, He must’ve come from Nissan, and only person left for Honda thus is then N. So,
