While Paper 2 is unique for every subject, meaning that paper 2 for each subject would differ from one another. As for Paper 2, it shall have questions specific to the subject chosen by the candidate.

UGC NET 2023 Syllabus for Paper 1 & 2 can be accessed through the link.

UGC NET 2023 Exam Pattern

Knowing the exam pattern well is important if you are targeting to crack the UGC NET December 2023. The details regarding the UGC exam pattern have been discussed below.

As previously mentioned above, The UGC NET exam comprises two papers. The first is a common/general paper, and the second is a subject-specific paper.

The time duration allotted to complete both the papers is 3 hours, meaning that there is no break between the two papers. Therefore, it is up to the candidate to manage his time between the two papers accordingly.

The candidates are generally advised to devote more time for Paper 2 compared to Paper 1, since the Paper 2 contains more questions.

As the marking scheme goes, there is no provision of negative marking in both the papers.

Therefore, both the papers differ in their respective exam patterns:

  • Paper 1 – It is same for all candidates and contains a total of 50 questions.
  • Paper 2 – It is subject specific with a total of 100 questions.

Both the papers are objective in character. I am sure the images above have given you a brief idea, know more about the UGC NET Paper 1 and Paper 2 Exam Pattern here.

Preparation Tips for UGC NET JRF

UGC NET 2023 Mock Test & Books

To effectively prepare for UGC NET December 2023, it is important for aspirants to solve mock tests and have a reliable booklist to prepare effectively for examination.

Okay, so from the very start, let me inform you that reading from the right books would be essential for your preparation, also, along with reading from the right books you’d need to solve the various mock tests that are available for the NTA NET exam.

Now, when I say right books, there are several books in the market that shall help you prepare for the UGC NET in the most consolidated and efficient manner. Some of the books recommended for UGC NET 2023 are as follows:

  • UGC NET/SET General Paper 1 – 2020 Edition by Trueman
  • UGC NET/JRF/SET General Paper 1 – Teaching & Research Aptitude by Arihant Publication
  • NTA UGC NET/SET/JRF Paper 1 – Teaching and Research Aptitude by KVS Madaan (Pearson Education)

To access the complete booklist, I have suggested a list of the most relevant books here.

Talking about Mock tests, you should know that your preparation strategy would not be effective without practicing mock tests.

Solving mocks would help you to test yourself from time to time and reveal your weaknesses to you. That way you’d be able to work upon the weak areas and eliminate them.

Now, to combine both the elements of this section, I’d say that the best preparation strategy for the UGC NET would be one where, preparing from the right books and solving mocks, go hand in hand.

FAQs: UGC NET Complete Info

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
What is JRF in the UGC NET exam?

The full form of JRF is Junior Research Fellowship.

Basically, the JRF holders are the creme de la creme of all those who qualify for the UGC NET exams, which constitutes a very less percentage of the total qualifiers. The JRF letter/e-Certificate signifies that a JRF holder can avail of the scholarship while pursuing M.Phil./Ph.D.

The intention behind the JRF is to inspire NET JRF qualified students to pursue M.Phil./Ph.D. in their area of interest. NTA declares two cut offs – one for clearing NET (which makes you eligible to apply for Assistant Professorship) and the other one (higher of the two) for JRF. The E-Certificate/score is valid for 3 years whereas the NET score is valid for the lifetime.

The JRFs are entitled to some special benefits that separate them from normal NET qualifiers.

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
What is the stipend after qualifying the UGC NET JRF?

After qualifying JRF, you will be eligible for stipend of approximately 31000 INR per month (for the first 2 years) if you pursue a Ph.D. or M.Phil. from a UGC NET approved university.

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
Is UGC NET and JRF the same?

Let me say straight off the bat that the exam for qualifying both is the same. However, there are a few differences pertaining to the benefits and the cut off. Let me elaborate.

When the UGC NET JRF results are released, then there are two cut offs declared, one for the UGC NET and the other for the UGC NET JRF. The JRF cut off is slightly higher than the other cut off. Those who clear the JRF cut off become JRF qualifiers and those who manage to clear the UGC NET cut off but not the UGC NET JRF cut off become eligible for Assistant Professor.

The next difference is that the score of NET is valid for a lifetime whereas the score of JRF is valid only for 3 years. The JRF qualification entitles you to a host of other benefits which I have answered in the question pertaining to the ‘benefits of NET JRF’ in this blog.

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
What are the benefits of NET JRF?

Being a NET JRF qualifier myself, I think I can answer this question better than most.

You see, the UGC NET exam gives you an opportunity to foray into the field of academics and research by making you eligible for a post of an assistant professor, or a Junior Research Fellow (JRF), or both. In the case of the assistant professor post, you only need to score above the cut offs in the exam to become eligible for it.

However, to be eligible for the JRF post, you’d need to clear the exam with high marks. Being a JRF will entitle you to a scholarship of 31000 INR per month for the first 2 years and 35000 INR per month for the remaining tenure after that. Sweet, isn’t it? So, I’d urge you to put in the extra effort, ace your UGC NET, and become a JRF.

The UGC NET exam is a series of exams conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for 83 different subjects including Management, Philosophy, Electronic Science, Yoga, and many others. Most of the subjects belong to non-science streams like Humanities, Management, Arts, etc. The latest addition in the UGC NET subject list is Hindu Studies and Indian Knowledge System.

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
How many times is UGC NET conducted in a year?

The UGC NET is held twice every year i.e., once in June and once in December.

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
What is the full form of UGC NET?

    • The National Testing Agency on behalf of UGC conducts the exam for NET.

What is the difference between CSIR NET and UGC NET?
One of the major differences between CSIR NET and UGC NET is that while the exam for CSIR NET is held for the selection of candidates with educational background in the fields of Science, Technology and Engineering, the UGC NET is conducted with the purpose of selecting the candidates in the field of Commerce, Humanities and Arts.

Hi Anuj, The information is quite detailed, however I am confused between pass percent (40% Paper I + Paper II) and cut off. I do not intend to apply for JRF as I have passed the age limit and neither am I keen on Asst Professor as I work in the corporate sector. I only wish to appear NET Exams to pursue PhD in which case if I score a minimum 40% and pass in both papers does that mean I am UGC NET Qualified?

      Hello Elvis,
The minimum eligibility criteria to qualify for UGC NET are as follows:

      1. You must secure at least 40% aggregate marks (i.e. both Paper I and Paper II combined) for general category candidates.
      2. For candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PWD and Transgender categories, the minimum qualifying percentage is 35%.

But, note that you need to clear the overall cutoff 60% to qualify the UGC NET exam.
