FAQs: UGC NET Complete Info
- What is JRF in the UGC NET exam?
This question calls for an analogy as an answer. Take a glass of creamy milk. Churn it until the cream separates from the milk beneath it. Now assuming that the glass of milk was a glass full of UGC NET qualifiers, the cream on top is the layer of JRF qualifiers. Do you get my drift? Basically, the Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) are the creme de la creme of all those who qualify the NET exams, which constitutes a very less percentage of the total qualifiers. The JRFs are entitled to some special benefits that separate them from normal NET qualifiers, such as exemption from written tests while applying for an M.Phil. Program, acceptance into Ph.D. programs in exclusive universities, entitlement to a monthly stipend of approximately 31000 INR, etc.
- What is the stipend for JRF qualifiers?
This question is a fairly simple one, and yet the answers to it can be many. So if you are a JRF qualifier, you’ll be paid a stipend of around 31000 INR per month if you pursue a Ph.D. or M.Phil. from a UGC NET approved university. This amount increases up to 35000 INR per month after 2 years. Now, this amount is inclusive of the House Rent Allowance (HRA) which is different for different cities. Therefore the stipend amounts also varied depending on the city you’ve chosen to do your Ph.D. from.
- Is UGC NET and JRF the same?
This question that you’ve asked is an important one, my friend. Let me say it straight of the bat that qualifying for the UGC NET and qualifying for JRF through the UGC NET are two different things. Not clear?…let me elaborate.
When the UGC NET JRF results are declared, then there are two cut offs declared, one for the UGC NET and the other for the UGC NET JRF. The UGC NET JRF cut off is slightly higher than the UGC NET Cut off. Those who clear the UGC NET JRF cut off become JRF qualifiers and those who manage to clear the UGC NET Cut off but not the UGC NET JRF Cut off become eligible for Assistant Professor.
The next difference is that the score of NET is valid for a lifetime whereas the score of JRF is valid only for 2 years. The JRF qualification entitles you to a host of benefits that are not available to other NET qualifiers. Some of them are exemption from written test while applying for an M.Phil. Program, acceptance into Ph.D. programs in exclusive universities, entitlement to a monthly stipend of approximately 31000 INR, etc.
- What is the benefit of NET JRF?
Being a NET JRF qualifier myself, I think I can answer this question better than most. You see, the UGC NET exam gives you an opportunity to foray into the field of academics and research by making you eligible for a post of an assistant professor, or a Junior Research Fellow (JRF), or both. In the case of the assistant professor post, you only need to score in the UGC NET exam above the cut offs to become eligible for it. However, to be eligible for the JRF post, you’d need to clear the exam with high marks. Being a JRF will entitle you to a scholarship of 31000 INR per month for the first 2 years and 35000 INR per month for the remaining tenure after that. Sweet isn’t it? So, I’d urge you to put in the extra effort, ace your UGC NET, and become a JRF.
- When will UGC NET December 2020 Exam be conducted?
I know for a fact that if you were to get a buck for every time you read about the UGC NET 2020 Exam getting rescheduled due to the COVID-19 crisis, you would be a millionaire by now. So I won’t bore you with the details further. However, it should be noted that the UGC NET December 2020 Exam has been postponed, and will finally take place in the month of May from the 2nd to 17th in 2021. I write this after referring to the official UGC NET December 2020 notification that came out in February 2021.
- For how many subjects is the UGC NET Exam conducted?
The UGC NET exam is a series of exams conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for around 100 different subjects ranging from Management, Philosophy, Electronic Science, to Yoga. Most of the subjects belong to non-science streams like Humanities, Management, Arts, etc. Having said that I’d like to emphasize that the UGC NET exam is not a cakewalk. It will take meticulous preparation and effort on your part if you want to clear it in the subject of your choice. Having cleared the UGC NET JRF twice myself, I think I am qualified enough to make that claim.
- How many papers does one need to clear in order to qualify for the UGC NET Exam?
The UGC NET exam consists of 2 papers, namely Paper 1 and Paper 2, having a total of 150 questions, which you’d need to solve in 3 hours’ time. To clear the UGC NET exam you’d have to score above the UGC NET qualifying cut off marks of both papers. If you belong to the general category, you’d need to score above 40% in both the papers. In case you are from the SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/Transgender category, then you’d need to score above 35% for the same. By the way, I have to say something that you might like. The UGC NET exam does not have negative marking. This should make you attempt every question to the best of your ability to try and score well above the cut offs.
- How many times is UGC NET conducted in a year?
If you think that the NTA UGC NET is a single exam that takes once a year, you are grossly mistaken. Having cleared the UGC NET myself and having been taught thousands of UGC NET students over the years, I can say that the UGC NET is no walk in the park. The UGC NET is basically a series of 100 or more subject-specific exams held over a period of a fortnight, twice every year. Once in June and once in December.
- How can I get the UGC NET previous year papers of UGC NET Commerce?
I commend your decision to start solving UGC NET previous year question papers. It’s the wisest thing to do before any exam. These are not just papers but treasure chests of the most important questions and topics that are best not overlooked while preparing for the upcoming UGC NET exam. Unfortunately, ever since the start of the UGC NET exam in the online format, they have stopped providing the past year question papers, but don’t worry, I have compiled the past year papers with the help of my past year students.
