The UPSC CSEs are one of the most challenging exams of our time. The unpredictability of the exam and the vastness of its syllabus are well known. It consists of three phases, the Prelims, the Mains, and the Interview rounds, out of which the Mains is by far considered to be the toughest to crack.

The very fact that the Phase 2/Mains section of the exam consists of 9 descriptive type papers is enough to boggle anyone’s mind. All of these papers are of 250 marks except for 2 qualifying language-based papers of 300 marks each.

Out of the 7 papers of 250 marks are 2 papers which are called Optional paper 1 and Optional paper 2. These will be the papers I shall be restricting the article to, that too for the optional subjects of “Commerce & Accountancy” and “Management”.

In this article, I have done a detailed analysis of the optional papers of “Commerce & Accountancy” and “Management” of the last four years.

Having mentioned that, I know what must be going on in your mind. Why just the exam analyses of the 2 optional subjects of “Commerce & Accountancy” and “Management”, why not the other papers like the GS1, GS2, GS3, GS4, Essay, or any other optional paper?

Well, the reasons for that are two. First, the optional subjects of “Commerce & Accountancy” and “Management” are what I specialize in, and that you won’t find a more exhaustive exam analysis for the papers of these 2 subjects anywhere else on the internet.

The second reason is a bit more utilitarian. The fact that there are numerous materials on the internet pertaining to all UPSC papers except for the ones on the subjects of Commerce and Management, convinced me to restrict myself to the same.

About UPSC Commerce & Management Optionals

Now that you know the reasons why I have listed out the exam analyses of only the Commerce and Management optionals in this article, let me elaborate on why these 2 optionals are so relevant.

The best part about these 2 optional subjects is that it is very easy to score well in these subjects. All that you’d require to clear these papers is a clear understanding of the concepts and topics as per their syllabi up to the graduation level.

I know about this firsthand, as my brother is an IAS officer himself, and he had “Management” as his optional subject, and I had cleared the UPSC Mains twice with “Commerce & Accountancy” as mine.

Another added benefit of choosing from these 2 optionals is the low level of competition that you’ll be facing. Meaning that, if you take History, or Public Administration, or Geography, you’ll face immense competition, as most UPSC students choose these subjects for their optional papers. However, that is not the case with the subjects of “Commerce & Accountancy” and “Management”.

Furthermore, according to the annual reports released by the UPSC every year, the subjects of “Commerce & Accountancy” and “Management”, have consistently ranked as the ones with some of the highest success rates in the UPSC Mains.

Therefore, my advice would be that if you are from the commerce background, do not opt for subjects like history, or geography in your optional papers. Rather you should choose one out of Commerce, or Management as your optional subject, as it would be much more beneficial for you.

That said, for those of you who have already decided on having the subjects of Commerce, or Management as your optional subjects, the exam analyses of the past years papers of Commerce & Management that I have written below are no less than a treasure chest.

The 2021 Commerce and Management optional of the UPSC CSE Mains will be held on 16th January 2022.

Check the complete set of exam dates for the 2021 UPSC exams cycle.

Using the exam analyses that I have done of the past papers of the last 4 years, you can easily understand the kind of questions that might be asked in the upcoming exams, the important topics, and also the marks you’d need to secure in order to clear the cut-offs.

So, without further ado, let us start with the Commerce Optional exam analysis.

UPSC Commerce Optional Exam Analysis

In the UPSC Commerce optional past years paper analysis that I have given below, you shall find the exam analysis of the commerce papers of the past 4 years, i.e., from that of 2017 to that of 2020.

Let us understand the pattern of the Commerce optional papers for a bit.

Both the commerce optional papers have 2 sections, namely Section A and Section B.

In paper 1 of Commerce, the questions that are asked are based on the topics of Tax, Audit, Accounts, Costing, and FM & IFS (Financial Management & Indian Financial System), and the topics cannot be divided according to the 2 sections in it. Meaning, that Section A, as well as Section B of paper 1, both have questions from all of the topics mentioned above.

In paper 2 of Commerce, unlike paper 1, the topics can be divided according to the sections. Section A consists of questions from the topics of Organizational Behaviour (OB), and Organizational Theory (OT), whereas Section B contains questions from the topics of Human Resource Management (HRM), and Industrial Relations (IR).

As far as marks go, the Commerce optional papers, like all optional papers have a maximum mark of 250, i.e., 250 for paper 1, and 250 for paper 2. However, these papers have a lot of optional questions, meaning that you can often choose to answer any one of two questions given in the paper. Therefore, if we were to add up the marks of the optional questions as well, the total marks of the papers would be 400. In other words, 400 for paper 1, and 400 for paper 2.

Furthermore, questions would be of either 10, 15, or 20 marks, and very rarely of 25 marks, in the papers, out of which the 10 marks questions are usually the compulsory ones. So, while analyzing and studying the past years papers, make sure that you do not miss out on these.

Talking about not missing out on questions, here’s a piece of important advice. Even though, in the exams, you’d have to attempt only 250 out of the total 400 marks worth of questions in each paper, its usually highly recommended that you analyze and study each of the questions of the past years, irrespective of whether it is an optional question or not. That way your preparation would be more holistic, and you won’t miss out on any topic.

Lastly, before I begin with the UPSC Commerce optional exam analysis, here’s something to take note of. I have given the PDF links to the papers of the particular year before the exam analyses of the same. Meaning that before listing the analysis of paper 1 of the 2020 Commerce exam, I have shared the PDF link of the same, and for paper 2, I have shared the PDF link of paper 2.

Moreover, in the year-wise exam analysis tables that I have given below, you’ll find that I have listed down every single question in a topic-wise manner, along with its level of difficulty, and the marks it contained. I have also mentioned if the questions are Numerical based or not.

Therefore, for best results, I’d recommend that you refer to the PDFs mentioned above while going through the Exam analysis tables I have listed below.

As you can see in the table above, I have listed the aggregates of all the Commerce paper 1 exam analysis tables, from the year 2017 to 2020.

According to the table, it is very clear that the 2018 paper was extremely hard as compared to those of the other years.

Now let me quickly jot down the overall learnings (Topic wise) from the Commerce optional exam analysis that we have done of the Paper 1s of the years 2017-2020:

  • Tax – The questions asked from the topic of Tax are generally easy. To score sufficiently in this topic, A thorough coverage of the syllabus should be enough.
  • AuditThe weightage of the topic of Audit is not much in the exams, but most questions asked from this topic are compulsory. Hence, it cannot be ignored
  • Accounts – The Numerical questions asked from the topic of Accounts would demand significant practice. Be thoroughly prepared in accounts.
  • Costing – The questions from this topic are generally of the easy level. Covering the entire costing syllabus should ensure high scores for you.
  • FM & IFS – This topic holds the highest weightage in Paper 1. So be as thorough as possible. Also, it should be noted that nowadays, even questions from current affairs are being asked in this topic.

This brings us to the end of the Commerce optional exam analysis of Paper 1. Now let’s look at the exam analysis of Paper 2 of the past years.

As can be seen in the table above, I have listed the aggregates of all the Commerce paper 2 exam analysis tables, from the year 2017 to 2020.

Like paper 1 Overall analysis table, this table too shows that the 2018 paper was extremely hard as compared to those of the other years.

Now let me quickly jot down the overall learnings (Topic wise) from the Commerce optional exam analysis that we have done of the Paper 2s of the years 2017-2020:

  • OB – In this topic, a good coverage of the syllabus would be enough for you to score well.
  • OT – This topic holds the higher weightage in the Section A of Paper 2. There are some indirect questions asked from this topic as well, but proper answer writing practice before the exam should do the trick.
  • HRM – This topic is very easy to cover and holds a high weightage in Section B of Paper 2. Use standard notes and text to cover the entire syllabus to cover the topic of HRM, and you’d be able to score well.
  • IR – This topic normally holds the least importance in Paper 2. However, the problem with IR is that most questions from the topic are of the compulsory kind, making it very difficult to pass them. So, make sure to cover the IR syllabus to score well here.

This brings us to the end of the Commerce optional exam analysis of Paper 2, and the Commerce Optional exam analysis as a whole. Now it’s time to start with the topic of the UPSC Management optional exam analysis.

UPSC Management Optional Exam Analysis

Much like the UPSC Commerce optional past years paper analysis that I have given above, in the case of the UPSC Management optional past years paper analysis, I have done the same.

This means that in the UPSC Management optional past years paper analysis that I have given below, you shall find the exam analysis of the Management papers of the past 4 years, i.e., from that of 2017 to that of 2020.

Now, let us understand the pattern of the Management optional papers for a bit.

Like the Commerce papers, both the Management optional papers have 2 sections, namely Section A and Section B.

In paper 1, Section A of Management, the questions that are asked are usually based on the topics I have mentioned below:

  • Management
  • Organizational Behaviour (OB)
  • Human Resource Management (HRM)

In paper 1, Section B of Management, the questions that are asked are usually based on the topics of:

  • Accounting
  • Financial Management (FM)
  • Marketing
  • Costing

Paper 2 of Management, Section A consists of questions from the topics of:

  • Statistics
  • Product Operations Management (POM)
  • Management Information System (MIS)

Paper 2 of Management, Section B consists of questions from the topics of:

  • Government Business Interface (GBI)
  • Strategic Cost Management (SCM)
  • International Business (IB)

Having said that, I’d like to point out that the Subject pattern I have written above is something that can randomly change.

The reason I say this is because while the pattern I have mentioned above had been followed in the 2017, 2019, and 2020 UPSC Management optional papers, but the 2018 paper was something else entirely. You will be able to see it in the year-wise paper analysis tables I have given down.

So, I’d say that, while preparing for the Management optional papers, it would be better if you did not prepare section-wise, and did it by picking up every individual subject at a time, instead.

As far as marks go, the Management optional papers, like all optional papers have a maximum mark of 250, i.e., 250 for paper 1, and 250 for paper 2.

However, these papers have a lot of optional questions, meaning that you can often choose to answer any one of two questions given in the paper.

Therefore, if we were to add up the marks of the optional questions as well, the total marks of the papers would be 400. In other words, 400 for paper 1, and 400 for paper 2.

Furthermore, questions would be of either 10, 15, or 20 marks, in the papers, out of which the 10 marks questions are usually the compulsory ones. So, while analysing and studying the past years’ papers, make sure that you do not miss out on these.

Talking about not missing out on questions, here’s a piece of important advice. Even though, in the exams, you’d have to attempt only 250 out of the total 400 marks worth of questions in each paper, its usually highly recommended that you analyse and study each of the questions of the past years, irrespective of whether it is an optional question or not. That way your preparation would be more holistic, and you won’t miss out on any topic.

Lastly, before I begin with the UPSC Management optional exam analysis, here’s something to take note of.

I have given the PDF links to the papers of the particular year before the exam analyses of the same. Meaning that before listing the analysis of paper 1 of the 2020 Management exam, I have shared the PDF link of the same, and for paper 2, I have shared the PDF link of paper 2.

As can be seen in the table above, I have listed the aggregates of all the Management paper 2 exam analysis tables, from the year 2017 to 2018.

Like paper 1 Overall analysis table, this table too shows that the 2018 paper was pretty hard as compared to those of the other years.

Now let me quickly jot down the overall learnings (Topic wise) from the Management optional exam analysis that we have done of the Paper 2s of the years 2017-2020:

  • Statistics – This subject carries consistently high weightage & requires a lot of practice to score well in.
  • Product Operations Management (POM) – This subject carries consistently high weightage & requires a lot of practice to score well in.
  • Management Information System (MIS) – This subject carries consistently high weightage & requires a lot of memorizations to score well in.
  • Government Business Interface (GBI) – This subject carries consistently high weightage & requires a lot of memorizations to score well in. It is connected with GS.
  • Strategic Cost Management (SCM) – This subject carries consistently high weightage & is easy to understand and score in.
  • International Business (IB)– This subject carries consistently high weightage & is easy to understand and score in.
  • Marketing – This subject is of consistently high weightage. It is easy to cover and score. (Usually asked in Paper 1 though)
  • Costing – This subject is of consistently low weightage. However, it is easy to cover and score. (Usually asked in Paper 1 though)

This brings us to the end of the Management optional exam analysis of Paper 2, and also the article as a whole.

Conclusion

That brings us to the end of this massive article. In it I have talked in detail about the UPSC Optional papers of Commerce and Management, and I have also given the analysis of each and every past year paper of the same, along with its PDFs.

Please go through this article thoroughly & make use of it to better your understanding of the UPSC Commerce and Management optional papers. That said, its time for me to take leave. Until next time.

Have a great day!
